Upcycling DIY: Spice Rack and Handlettering Spice Boxes

October 8, 2016

[Werbung:] Hooray, time for another DIY project! Do you know tesa? tesa is a brand for glue, tape and creative solutions to attach objects to surfaces. They have recently approached me and asked if I wanted to do a creative project with their new products.

Upcycling is alway fun, so I made a minimalistic spice rack which I hung on the wall with tesa’s new sticky nails and I also did some handlettering to embellish spice boxes.

tesa’s new Adhesive Nails and Screws

tesa has released new adhesive fixture systems with sticky nails and screws for all relevant surfaces. They are an awesome addition to conventinal screws and nails, you don’t need any screwing or hammering and you can attach objects to the wall more easily and also faster.

Since my kitchen spice rack is super super crowded, I wanted a new solution and thought that a collaboration with tesa would be a nice opportunity.

This wall has lots of space, so I decided that this is where I wanted to place the new spice rack made of an old wooden tray.

Upcycling DIY: Spice Rack and Handlettering Spice Boxes with tesa

What you need for this project:
– Two wooden trays, a bigger and a smaller one (which fits inside)
– tesa’s adhesive nails for wallpaper and wall plaster (which hold 2kg of weight)
– A pair of light suspension brackets to hang up the trays
– Double-sided sticky tape
– Cardboard boxes to store spices
– White sticky labels for the boxes
– Handlettering-pens / black felt-tips
– Scissors
– Acrylic paint and paint brushes in the color of your choice

As a first step, use the acrylic paint to paint your wooden trays.

Make several layers until everything is covered in paint.

While the paint is drying, use the white sticky labels to embellish your spice boxes with pretty letterings. Use contrasting fonts for a pretty look.

Next, use the pair of light suspension brackets to hang up the trays.

Take the double-sided sticky tape, put it onto their backside and press them onto the bigger tray’s back.

Next, use the double-sided tape again and put the smaller tray into the bigger one. Press it down until it sticks properly.

Then take tesa’s adhesive nails for wallpaper and wall plaster which hold 2kg of weight. They are perfect for this project.

They hold the perfect amount of weight and can even be changed in their height.

Measure the distance between the two hangers at the back.

Use the measurements (and if you own one, also use a bubble level) in order to mark the spots at your wall at the place where you want to attach the trays.

Then clean the surface before attaching the sticky nails to ensure that they last permanently. Use your sticky tape which belongs to the adhesive nails and press it down to the wall according to the manual.

For the big nails, you each need a pair of two sticky stripes.
Use your fingers to press down each spot for several seconds.

You can also change the height (more advice can be found in the manual which comes with the sticky nails).

Then you can hang up your upcycled trays which are now a simple spice rack, hooray!

The handlettered labels look more pretty than conventional spice boxes, don’t they?

Ha, so pretty and such a good solution! Now my old spice rack isn’t that crowded anymore!

Apart from wallpaper, you can also use those adhesive nails and screws for other surfaces like tiles or metal, so practical. In case you can’t attach screws in your bathroom, this might be a good solution for light objects.
All products can be found on the tesa website or also on Amazon, simply take a look and try it out! :)

DIY: Botanical Watercolor Illustration

October 5, 2016

[Werbung:] Hello everybody! Apart from doing handlettering, I also love mostly any other bright DIY project and this time, I decided to do a tutorial with watercolors. Back in spring, I teamed up with OTTO for a colorful cooperation in which I created content for their new Pinterest campaign and this fall, they approached me again and I am supporting them with their new living and interior campaign.

OTTO sells lots of furniture, interior objects, decoration and home textiles.

For their new campaign, I chose a chest of drawers from their Home Affaire series to build it
together, to do a tiny makeover and to decorate it with plants and a
botanical watercolor illustration.

New Chest of Drawers – Mini Makeover:

First of all, I had to put all pieces together according to the instructions. I totally like the chest of drawer, but I did not like the metallic knobs, they do neither fit my taste of interior style, nor do they match with my wooden furniture.

Thus, I went to the hardware store and got myself some new wooden knobs.
For a little makeover, I just used permanent spray in white and sprayed the knobs outside on my balcony.

You will need several layers until they are fully covered.

Turn them around frequently so that each side will finally be covered in paint.
Ta daaaa!

Then I exchanged the knobs and substituted the silver metal ones with the new white wood knobs.

There it is, my new chest of drawers, prettily decorated with some plants.

There is plenty of space inside and I filled the top drawers with the items that I need most freuquently; my business cards, handmade postcards and envelopes for happy mail.

The rest of the chest of drawers is now filled with craft supplies like paint, pens, glue, tape, and so on. Everything in one place, yay!

Yippie, I am super satisfied with the result and how well the chest of drawer matches my other pieces of furniture and harmonizes with everything else around.
Now let’s get started with the crafty part:

DIY: Make Your Own Botanical Watercolor Illustration

To add something even more special to the green mini garden on top of the chest of drawers, I decided to make a botanical watercolor illustration and here is a tutorial for you to make one yourself.

What you need for the DIY:
– Watercolor paper (this soaks in the water without becoming warped)
– Watercolors and watercolor paint brushes
– A pencil, some water and a picture frame

First, use your pencil and carefully start drawing outlines for a botanical plant. In case you need inspiration, have a look at Google, at a botanical encyclopedia or check out the campaign’s Pinterest group board with botanical prints.

Use lots of water to mix the colors and try to get a feeling for how much water you need in order to optain the shade of color that you want.

Draw your motiv, mix colors, add shades and try to find your own style.

As a next step, let everything dry a little and then add brighter highlights if neccessary.

Hooray, that’s it!

After having let your illustratrion dry properly, you can frame it and add it to your gallery.
In my case, it perfectly fits the other plants on the chest of drawers and makes me enjoy the last moments of summer even more.

Yippie yay!

Material Mix and Exotic Patterns:

To get inspired by all the patterns and exotic prints and to furnish your home with some jungle flair, have a look at the Material Mix & Exotic Patterns group board on Pinterest that OTTO, some other bloggers and I are curating. So much fun!
Thank you for reading and thank you for this cooperation, dear OTTO-team! :)

Handlettering Workshop Announcement

September 9, 2016

Hello everybody! Good news to all local people who are based in and around Berlin: you know that I love handlettering a lot and this is why it is time for hosting a handlettering workshop.

This year, DaWanda is again hosting the Long Night of DIY (= Lange Nacht des Selbermachens), a night during which hundreds of DIY workshops take place all over Germany (and also Austria and Switzerland) and people gather together in order to get crafty.

Luloveshandmade’s Handlettering Workshop:

After having given weekly DIY workshops for my job at DaWanda for many months, now it’s time to do it again, this time with a handlettering workshop. I am happy that the event team has asked me to join the fun. The event is taking place at the huge main event of the Long Night of DIY in Berlin and it is even starting in the morning.
Handlettering Workshop with Luloveshandmade:
At the Long Night of DIY (= Lange Nacht des Selbermachens)
Karstadt at Hermannplatz, Berlin-Neukölln
September 24, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Come by, learn some handlettering basics, fonts and advice and take home your own handmade lettering. Let’s get to know each other and spend a great creative day together! :)

I’ll provide you with what I have learned and taught myself. Materials will be provided, edding is a partner of DaWanda and will be sponsoring brushpens.

You don’t have to bring anything and you don’t need to have any experience or knowledge about lettering.

Brand New Handlettering Postcards:

For the workshop, I made a huge pile of new postcards. The are made with letterings from the past months, my bestie Anja of Aentschies Blog designed the back.

Every workshop participant can take home a hand full of postcards as long as there are some left. :)

You don’t have to register in advance, just come by and say Hi!

I’m looking forward to seeing you there! :)

Happy weekend and thanks for reading!

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Repotting my Plant Collection

September 4, 2016

Hello everyone! After being out with friends for most of the last weekends, it feels so relaxing to just be at home for three days in a row, running some errands, going to the market, playing Super Mario and rearranging the home.

One thing I particularly enjoyed this weekend and to which I am also dedicating this blogpost is repotting my plants: during the past two years, thanks to my best friend Anja of Aentschies Blog, I have started owning plants and luckily, most have been surviving ever since.

Some of my cacti, succulents and other plants have been growing like crazy, so they urgently needed a new home. At first, all dead plants on the balcony were cleared out, so there were several new pots for being filled again. We then drove to the garden center, bought new soil and some other supplies and it took several hours this whole weekend to repot everything.

The home was dirty – I was, too – and it needed some cleaning, but the whole thing was sooo relaxing and thanks to the effort and Anja’s constant helpful advice, I have nearly doubled the amount of plant pots and all plants have enought space again.

Hooray, so much fun!

This is the most spontaneous blogpost I have written in a while and I am enjoying it to the fullest. :)
Have a splendid Sunday, I will enjoy mine with friends coming over for brunch pretty soon, so I will now have to hop into the kitchen.
