Planning & Organization

March 6, 2014

Hello, my dear readers! I am often asked by friends, readers or followers how I manage the balance between university, job, blogging and different projects and how I still get things done without being overwhelmed and I thought it would be nice to share a blogpost about it.
When organizing my everyday life and keeping the balance between all different kinds of parts which I’m busy with, it’s super important for me to have several lists, always make sketches and write down every single idea and deadline in order to not forget anything.

Usually carrying a little notebook with me, it helps me to write down ideas immediately and I have separate idea lists for all kinds of different projects and goals (e.g. DIY blogpost ideas, party concepts, private tasks, etc).

At the beginning of the year, I made myself a monthly calendar where I insert weekly tasks, deadlines, project dates and even private dates. Thus, I always have a monthly overview and it totally helps me setting priorities and keeping in mind what’s next.

Apart from having a detailed calendar and a notebook, I also have a sketchbook. I do not always carry it with me (it’s big and heavy), but this is where I draw sketches into when I’m at home and this is also the book in which I collect sketches and drawings that I make when I’m on the way. There I collect ideas for new shop products, make drawings of handmade gift ideas or sketches for projects.

Moreover, I also use this book when developing the concept for an upcoming party or food table and make sketches of the food display and table setup and order to save time on the day of the little photo shooting.

In addition to all my different methods of keeping my life organized, I have a detailed to do list as a google drive document. In the past, I have always been using a paper to do list, but it’s getting on my nerves when I’ve already crossed out a lot and the list still looks to full. :D What is more, keeping a virtual to do list makes it easier to insert new tasks when I’m somewhere else and when I don’t have my list with me, I only have to open my doc, for example with my smartphone. Moreover, keeping a virtual list makes it easier to switch priorities and the order of tasks, lets you highlight several points and makes it easy having different categories and sub-lists on one page. On top of my list, there are always super urgent projects (e.g. to do’s for blog cooperations), then there’s a section for normal private tasks (like making a dentist appointment or preparing a birthday gift for a friend) and at the bottom there’s a suuuper long list of ideas for blog content (DIYs, recipes, series, bigger projects, etc.) so that I never forget anything or run out of ideas.
In addition to this virtual list, I always have one tiny piece of paper on my desk with the most urgent tasks for the next couple of days. I edit this list every few days and this helps me not to lose track of priorities.

Moreover, I also have a google doc table for blog cooperations: a list of completed projects, tasks which still need to be finished and an overview over the conditions that the cooperation partner and I have decided on so that I don’t have to browse all my past mails each time I’m looking for a details. I also have such a list for ads on my blog (with an overview of who booked which time span, size, etc). I’m a visual person and this makes it easier for me to get all details at one glance.

Last but not least, I use Pinterest a lot: I looove this tool and I love a lot that you can create private boards. I use these for pinning the tools and supplies I need for certain ideas and it’s also great for secretly or publicly pinning inspiration for upcoming projects.

As you can see, I do not simply have a normal to do list, but I use several completely different methods for organizing my private life and work life. Because I love making lists and because I love to plan and to organize, this makes it a lot easier for me. I absolutely think that a good plan is worth a lot and solves an anormous amount of time when getting started and making an idea come true.

How do you organize everything? Any additional advice or personal preferences and tricks? :) I’d love to learn more!

Happy day!

My Life in Instagram Photos: January & February 2014

March 4, 2014

Hi friends and happy Tuesday! :) Here’s a January & February review in colorful Instagram photos. To be honest, I actually took nearly 300 Instagram photos in those two months, so I had to sort out a lot to limit this blogpost to a few favorites. :) If you want to see all photos, you can follow me on Instagram. :)

Blue and yellow with my beloved hat from my sponsor beaniefabrik. // Kitchen cabinet. // Collection of geometrical necklaces, handmade by me or other indie businesses. // What I wore.

Dutch quarter in Potsdam. // Shoes at home. // Hamdmade crochet headband. // Colorful outfit. // Dogs. // Planning.

Dear Jilli and I at work for DaWanda. // Daily outfit. // Brunch date with lovely girls. // Mogli’s punishment for being extra greedy. :D // Brunch at home. // Studying: this was how my desk looked like nearly all January, it was super exhausting! In the end I didn’t fail any exam and most of my grades were great, puh! :)

Winter days: super busy January, but colorful outfits and happy dates helped me to make this season filled with studying more bearable. :)

Making DIY videos for DaWanda. // Snowy days. // Making plans for the upcoming year and getting an overview of what’s ahead. // Cozy dog. // Colors. // Valentine’s Day sweet table.

Colorful kitchen for a girl’s coffee date.

My 27th birthday, eeeks! :) Brunch date with Flo, spending the day in Berlin with beautiful weather and then an evening at home with mediterranean dinner with friends. Perfect!

Morning view. // Shrimply Mogli. // Our kitchen sink. // Setting up the table for an after-birthday-dinner with some of my girlfriends. // Daily outfit. // Kitchen table decor.

Colorful bag collection.

Home sweet home: bedroom and workspace. // Spontaneous burger date with Flo. // Wearing my handmade geometrical DIY necklace. // On my desk.

Now it’s semester holidays and besides working at DaWanda, I now have more time for my blog and my projects again. :)
What are you currently busy with?
Happy evening!

Handmade Flower Pots // Workshops at DaWanda

February 28, 2014

Hello my friends, happy Friday! :)
Most of you know that I work at DaWanda as a social media working student and apart from being responsible for the external DIYs in the blog, I organize the weekly DIY workshops at the DaWanda Snuggery in Berlin. Next week, there’ll be a workshop in which we paint and decorate pretty flower pots for spring and this is the purpose for which I made those colorful planters yesterday at work.

It would have been a pity not to share those photos also with you here on my blog (maybe it inspires you to get started with decorating for your own balcony or kitchen windowsill? :)) and I thought maybe some of you Berlin readers are interested in joining the workshops. :) In case you want to come, you can register here on the Snuggery page. Because there are always so many people wanting to come, I’ll draw lots next Tuesday. In case you don’t get a place this time, don’t worry, there are great workshops every week, each time with another subject. :)

Hopefully I’m gonna see some of you at an upcoming workshop and now you’re as inspired as I am to keep on decorating for spring. :)
Happy weekend!

Handmade Birthday Basket

February 26, 2014

Hello dear readers! Thanks a lot for your lovely feedback and constructive criticism concerning my new blog layout, I appreciate this a lot! :)
This post is dedicated to the birthday present I made for my best friend Anja two weeks ago: I wanted to give her several different presents, mostly for her kitchen, plus a handmade voucher for a picnic in summer. Thus, I wanted to pack the presents in a way that the packaging is related to the present itself – the picnic – and fits into her home and can be used like all the other presents for her kitchen.

Because I nowhere found a white basket with handles, I bought one which I had to paint. Thanks to my last cooperations, I still had lots of white edding spray paint left which they once sent me for review and projects and this time, I used this paint to turn the basket white.

At first, I spray painted the inside, then the outside of the basket.

I used wooden skewers, yarn and masking tape to make a bunting and hang it above the basket for a real spring feeling. :)

For the voucher I drew a picnic basket and wrote the text on its back and added some picnic-related illustrations.

Being filled with colorful presents, the basket looked even prettier. :)

Apart from the quality time voucher, Anja got a turquoise teapot by Nordal, a rice dk cup in yellow, white pudding ramekins, organic tea, paper straws via DaWanda and organic flowers seeds. :)

How much I love preparing presents and I even love it more when putting together and wrapping a present after a certain concept like this time with the picnic theme. :)

Happy week!

Blog Makeover – Insights into my Creative Process

February 25, 2014

Hello hello hello! Eeeks, I’m so excited, because here’s my new blog layout on which I’ve been working for the last few days and which I’ve been planning for the last month.
At the end of the last year, I felt the desire to make a few changes on my blog and to redesign some elements and structures. In January, I was super busy with studying for this semester’s exams (which I all passed, yayy! :)) and didn’t have the time to get started, but I used train rides and free minutes to think about a concept and to make first sketches.

What was most important to me was to keep my style and the feel of this blog while changing parts of the blog’s structure and making some elements a little bit more minimalistic. To make it easier for new readers to navigate my blog, I wanted to make two button bars out of the one bar I had before, I wanted to split it up into one navigation bar for content and categories and one button bar for organizational and informational stuff.
Moreover, I wanted to change some of the sub-pages of my blog and add more content to my archives.

Making sketches and writing down ideas was tons of fun and absolutely helped me to sort my thoughts and to make a list of what to make first and of what to do later. Thus, it made it easier to focus on what was most important and to get started as soon as I was ready and got enough time.

The color scheme I wanted to use and implement into my new design came to my mind quite early, long before I knew how the new structure would look like. I kept my standard pink (the second one from the left side) and added rose, coral and two shades of yellow. Those colors are pure happiness to me and fit my style extremely well.

As a next step, I made my ideas and sketches come true and created the elements as image file in photoshop. I’m a really visual person and working this way helps me to imagine the final look and lets me see how the single elements fit together. This step is one of my fave parts. :)

As each time when I’m making bigger visual changes on my blog come true, my best friend Anja is a great help: although I had a clear vision of how I wanted everything to look like and implemented all changes myself, she always has lots of extremely useful extra feedback and advice for me and sees tiny details to be improved which I don’t see myself (she’s a media designer and has lots of experience and an eye for aesthetics :)) and I’m always super thankful for her help and I learn a lot. :*

In the end, I think I was able to keep the feel and overall happy and colorful look of my blog, but I decluttered the sidebar, changed buttons, navigation and some other structures, put a bigger focus on content with adding the big buttons which direct to my archives and I made navigation for new readers easier.
When thinking about my blog in the past few years, it’s always super satisfying for me to be able to improve my blog’s design nearly on my own and I’m so happy about all the knowledge I’ve gained. This time, I even made lots of changes in the basic html code of my blog without destroying anything, this makes me extra proud. ;)
Can’t wait to hear your opinions!
While I’m already enjoying my blog’s new look, there are still some minor changes to be made, but most of the work has been done.
Happy week!
