Hey everyone!
Today I’ve got a special surprise for you – a free calendar printable for 2018 with awesome colorful illustrations that my friend Tietz of Notietzblock has made and with photos from a shooting I did with her last weekend.
Calendar Girls: the calendar is full of amazingly bright and colorful motifs, showing woment in nature or in happy everyday life situations. You can download it at the end of this blogpost. But first, I’d like to tell you something about Tietz, the calendar’s artist.
Get to know the Artist – Tietz of Notietzblock
Tietz and I got to know each other while both working at DaWanda. She was part of the graphics team, I was working in the PR team.
Quite early, Tietz already knew that she wanted to have a creative job, because she has always loved drawing, illustrations, advertisement and inspiring visuals. She has studied Communication Design and after trying out several techniques, she discovered per passion for creating illustrations. Some years later, she graduated with a diploma in illustration and created an own magazine all by herself which was about fashion illustrations and was called ‘figurine’.
After her studies, she did an internship in DaWanda’s graphics department to gain some further practical skills. In 2015, she then became a full-time employee and has spent her last two years there. Apart from carrying out all the everyday business like doing graphics for promo banners and social media posts, her highlights were creating illustrations and DIY tutorials for the company’s magazine, the LoveMag. She for example created a super cute festival bunting or an Advent calendar.
Because only developing graphics didn’t make her happy and illustrations for the magazine were only needed twice a year, she began working on ‘Notietzblock’ privately in her free-time to find her creative fulfillment elsewhere. She has been doing all the things she loves in order to find a balance for inner happiness, to add value to her creative work and to create something which also makes other people happy. For her it’s extremely important to find one’s inner satisfaction and to appreciate the own progress and achievements. I couldn’t agree more!
Over the past years when we have been working as colleagues, I always noticed her super cute illustrations and have quickly been fascinated by her style and motifs.
This summer while being out for dinner with some former colleagues, we talked about our side businesses, about our creative work which makes us both so happy and about how we could create a symbiosis for each other. Shortly after, we decided on this project and Tietz created this beautiful calendar over the last couple of weeks, we then did a shooting at my place last Sunday, I edited all the images and here I am, writing this blogpost and being super inspired by all the colors.
I simply love the exchange with other creatives and love seeing how they work and where they get their inspiration from, enriching each other’s lives.
Before I want to show you more of the beautiful calendar pages and some more images from our shooting, I don’t want to miss the chance to tell you even more about Tietz.
Her artist name ‘Notietzblock’ has developed through her nickname Tietz (her passport says that she is actually called Christina). She wanted her nickname to be part of her label’s name so that she could completely identify with it. Since her work traditionally always starts with pen and paper on a notebook (in German: „Notitzblock“), the combination of both words developed and then NOTIETZBLOCK was born.
Tietz just quit her graphics job in order to become fully self-employed in 2018 and to completely focus on illustrations. I think this is absolutely wonderful and also super brave. Life is too short for too many compromises and we should always try to do what makes us happy!
Her plan is to further develop her knowledge, to improve her skills, to try out new techniques and to do all of this as her main job. Eeeeeks, so exciting!
Tietz is really looking forward to new projects, experiences and encounters with other people and can’t wait for 2018.
During her illustration process, she always starts with making sketches on paper and works mainly analogous. She mostly works with colored pencils, paint brushes, ink and watercolors. Later on, she scans everything and does editing in photoshop to get those colors she wants to see on the final result. Doing this, she tries to keep as much of the individual features of her style as possible.
Now she finally found the time for creating a calendar, a project she has wanted to develop for quite a while.
She chose topics for the calendar with which she can completely identify and which are also currently present in media: female empowerment, women and girls in everyday life situations, in nature and in combination with floral elements. It’s all about women and how they express themselves. The slogans below the images can be seen as motto for the respective month and should serve as basic theme for the month.
For me it was extremely fun to shoot the calendar with her and to display it with lots of color and brightness, fitting into both of our styles. Such a fun project!
So here you can see all the pages and even download the PDF-file of the calendar to get it printed for yourself! :o)
